Supergiant Games‘ party-based sports RPG Pyre makes its DRM-free debut on GOG.
The indie game company has already made a name for themselves with Bastion and Transistor (both also available on GOG), and the similarities are clear to see: a mix of sci-fi and fantasy with fast-paced action that also requires strategic thinking, all presented in a beautiful hand-drawn and expansive world. Only this time, it comes with an eSports-like twist and non-linear storytelling.
One takes on the role of The Reader (who is obviously literate) who has been cast out from society and has to lead a group of three other exiles out of Downside, a forsaken landscape that equals purgatory and therefore provides an opportunity for them to redeem themselves. This can only be achieved by taking part in battles (or rites) against others that involve destroying the opponents’ columns of fire (or pyres) with a magic orb. One can switch between these characters who obviously have different abilities and attributes. While it all sounds a bit like the Amiga classic Speedball, but with outfitting the characters with talismans, leveling up, and using appropriate skills, this wouldn’t be a Supergiant Games title without a good story and memorable characters. So while their former games were pretty linear in plot progression and character development, one has to make decisions this time, and despite being able to fail matches, one doesn’t simply restart, but see different outcomes of the story. It’s certainly a departure from gameplay of past games, but as the game has received many accolades since its original release in 2017, this seems to have paid off.
