Longbow Games‘ Golem is a puzzle-platformer that has the potential to warm people’s hearts.
Games about two characters that have a strong bond seem to have come out of hibernation after Ico set the template for more thought-provoking experiences. Here it’s a young girl who resurrects a golem to help her bring back the water to her dried-out village. To do this both go deeper and deeper into an ancient tower that might hold the secret of a machine that might be the only hope for her world. Of course feeling something for one’s companion is paramount for a game like this, so that it doesn’t end up as a long escort mission.
This problem is addressed by giving both the golem and the girl specific skills that have to be combined in order to progress. A lot of platforming and puzzle solving ensues, and it all looks rather beautiful. Obviously there have been many games of this ilk before and the conundrums might not seem to be the most imaginative, but the way how the protagonists interact is already quite touching. As the golem has five different forms it can turn itself into, this is more than just the typical button-pushing. With a wonderful soundtrack, fluid animations and impressive backgrounds, this can be another great title for people who like their platformers and adventure games more contemplative.
The game is out now on PC with a 10% launch discount that will last until tomorrow, June 5, 6pm UTC.
