The times when cheap movie or TV show tie-ins were released might not be completely over, but certain improvements have been made, with Battlestar Galactica Deadlock being a prominent and positive example. The sci-fi reboot was quite a surprise for me when I watched it. I might not call it pivotal for the genre or TV landscape, but it was certainly a much more enjoyable ride than the rather trash-y original, so having a strategy title attempt and actually succeed in re-enacting those more realistic and brutal space combat scenes is even cooler.
The fight of humanity against the Cylons and the survival of the human colonies continue, as the player takes control of a battleship fleet as Rear-Admiral Lucinda Cain. Battles are shown in full 3D, while one builds ships and sends them out against enemies in a tactical pause menu. The ensuing battles certainly look impressive and feel as real as the original TV show with quite a few guest star appearances, although it’s a separate story with new characters as well. Graphically and voice acting/music-wise, it’s also true to the sci-fi origins, which is to be expected, as the game was only released last year.
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is out now on GOG with a 50% launch discount that will last until June 8, 1pm UTC. In addition to the base game, there are also two DLCs, the Reinforcement Pack with new ships and types of ammo with other additions, plus The Broken Alliance, a new 8-mission story campaign.
