GOG brings back more arcade fighting action with SNK’s The King of Fighters ’98 Ultimate Match Final Edition and The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match.
After the DRM-free releases of 15 SNK NEO-GEO classics, including The King of Fighters 2000 and The King of Fighters 2002, the newest arrivals complete the package of insane and often ridiculous brawling extravaganza.
The King of Fighters ’98 Ultimate Match Final Edition doesn’t only have the original and apparently best version of the fighting series, but also overhauls the game balance, while offering 64 fighters one can choose from. The addition of the “Ultimate Mode” allows the player to combine features of the original “Extra” and “Advanced” game modes to create his or her own, with the classic “Extra” and “Advanced” game modes having been re-balanced as well. 2 different online modes, “Rank Match” and “Player Match”, are available as well, in addition to an “Endless Mode”, “Challenge Mode” and “Practice Mode”. I’m not a connoisseur of the genre, but this sounds to be enough playtime and variety of gameplay styles.
The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match includes a 66 characters-roster, updated game sounds, upgraded and redesigned combat system, and re-balanced gameplay for all characters, plus more game modes to choose from. Again I’m not an expert in this series, but this game still looks and sounds great with big character sprites, fluid animations, and catchy background music, re-enacting that sense of playing in the arcades of old.
Both titles are now available on GOG with a 50% launch discount. Buying them together means 66% off their original prices. These offers only last until June 8, 1pm UTC, though.
