GOG finally releases the 3D adventure game Escape from Monkey Island and completes its package of LucasArts comic adventure titles with Guybrush Threepwood.
When I last covered the release news of The Curse of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, I already wished that the latest LucasArts adventure title Escape from Monkey Island would make it, and it seems that my wishes were heard.
While many people seemed to have disliked the direction the 3D Guybrush took, I have to say that I found it one of the best titles in the series, except for the third instalment, because it didn’t play it safe, introducing a new villain, an Australian gazillionaire who takes away the pirate and his wife Elaine’s estates, which means that there’s actually a surprising story this time around. Sure, the game’s controls are as bad as one would expect from a game that was made for 2D, but as far as I remember, the humor was just as great as the inventive puzzles, even if the dreaded Monkey Kombat mini-game later on was frustrating. Still, it’s amazing to finally have everything DRM-free, and it’s about time to review all of these legendary adventure games, come summer, or winter, or autumn, or whenever I’ll find the time for it.
Escape from Monkey Island is now available DRM-free on GOG with a series discount, i.e. 25% off The Curse of Monkey Island and 66% off The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and The Secret of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge – Special Edition. It’s also possible to grab all four games together with Stan’s permanent, additional 25% series discount. The individual discounts last until June 21, 1pm UTC, though, so be quick!
