The Warhammer license has been a very big deal in games for a long time, and even if I haven’t had the chance to try out the much-praised RTS titles, the newest one looks even more enticing, even if it means that it’s also more hardcore in difficulty thanks to the 4X formula of exploring, expanding, exploiting, and exterminating. The game takes place on the planet Gladius Prime where ancient artifacts were found during colonization, but something evil has also been awakened that now threatens the citizens of Gladius.
Of course with four playable factions (Astra Militarum, Space Marines, Orks or Necrons), the fight for survival and resources starts, but this time it’s all turn-based combat. Following different storylines with unique abilities for each faction also means various play styles due to varying technology trees. So even if the game might not reinvent the 4X genre, it’s still a first for the computer games and therefore comes close to the tabletop game original. It all looks and sounds fantastic, including the expected overacting, but this somehow fits the fantasy/sci-fi war theme.
The game is out now on PC in a standard and deluxe edition, the latter including the soundtrack, an exclusive unit, and several wallpapers. Despite not offering a launch discount, GOG gives away 1999 game Warhammer 40K: Rites of War for free if you buy Warhammer 40K: Gladius – Relics of War before July 26th, 3pm UTC. If you already own that game, you can contact the GOG support to receive a free copy for a friend.
