The fan adventure Return of the Tentacle proves that even free games can look and play as great as the ones that have inspired them.
After a decade in development the game was released yesterday, June 21, 2018, and is an unofficial sequel to Day of the Tentacle that can be downloaded for free on catmic’s itch.io website. The soundtrack is also available for free here. While I’m not up to date with all the fan adventures lately (even if I’ve written quite a few articles on Adventure-Treff), this release got me quite excited. After having reviewed Day of the Tentacle: Remastered and recently a few other LucasArts/Lucasfilm titles, Return of the Tentacle came out just at the right time.
The fan project is about Purple Tentacle trying to conquer the world and enslave humanity again, and only Bernard, Laverne and Hoagie are able to stand against it at the mansion of mad scientist Dr. Fred. Time travel is as much involved as solving weird puzzles and talking to even crazier people. Everything fans of the original point-and-click adventure genre would expect is present and correct here: hand-drawn characters and backgrounds, lots of slapstick humor, and more, including guest appearances from other games. If I’ll find the time to play the game, I’ll definitely do a review here. Until then, just head over to the website and download the game for free, as it’s not only in German, but features English text and voice acting as well. Don’t let the stigma that is sometimes attached to fan adventures fool you, because this is a very cool-looking title that has to be played by anyone who loved the original.
