Motion Twin‘s rogue-lite Metroidvania action-platformer Dead Cells is finally out of Early Access, and it looks gloriously brutal.
I don’t know how many games I’ve seen announced and released that have “rogue-lite”, “metroidvania”, and “pixel art” in their descriptions, so what makes this title so special? The indie developers call the game a RogueVania, a mix of roguelites and games like Castlevania. What this means is progressive exploration of interconnected levels and permadeath, but also unlocking new abilities and becoming better in combat that is reminiscent of the Souls games. The abilities that are unlocked are permanent, so even if one dies, one can access new areas with them.
Of course randomized loot and different characters mean a new experience each time with new secrets to uncover. This all might sound very familiar to those who’ve followed the indie scene, but it has to be said that the fluid animations, art direction, and sound make this a tough game not to love, especially since it survived Early Access, which is usually a pretty good sign for quality and a dedicated development team.
The game is out now on PC with a 20% launch discount that will last until August 13th, 10 PM UTC, with the soundtrack as an additional purchase option, while it’s also available on PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
