Event Horizon‘s real-time dungeon-crawler Tower of Time hits the GOG store.
Dungeon crawlers have resurfaced thanks to the indie scene, but the first-person perspective has prevailed so far. It’s great to see a game with an isometric point of view (that can be zoomed in and out, while also turned around) that is reminiscent of the Dungeon Siege gameplay and aesthetics, which means that the graphics are much more colorful, the lighting effects more impressive, and the combat being a mix of action and tactics. Being promoted as a story-driven RPG, there isn’t a lot to make out of the plot, except that a group of heroes make it through 11 levels of the titular building complex. To fill in the gaps of what the world of Artara that combines technology with magic offers, one can read lore books and other scattered pieces of information, or maybe one doesn’t and simply focuses on the action on screen.
Unlike traditional RPGs, there aren’t any experience points to be gained and used to level up characters, as everything is based on ancient knowledge in tomes to find and to collect. With 7 champion classes, each with 8 upgrade-able skills, there’s certainly enough variety and replayability for everyone, even if 50+ hours playtime should already be quite long. The battle system can be customized as well, because one can either play it with a slow-down function to order one’s group members around and select attacks/spells or defensive items, or one can simply pause in old-school Baldur’s Gate fashion and think before going into the action. With 150 enemies, 50 bosses, there’s more than enough to face, and if one decides to fall back, it’s possible to visit a city that serves as a gaming hub and that can be upgraded, too, for more powerful weapons, armor, and other useful items to buy before going back into the dungeon crawling business.
Tower of Time was released on Steam in April this year and is now available with a 30% launch discount that will last until September 3, 1pm UTC.
