Game release: “Graveyard Keeper” (PC,Xbox One)

Lazy Bear Games and tinyBuild present a building/management sim unlike any other with Graveyard Keeper.

The developer already had a knack for the absurd with Punch Club, but this time it gets even weirder and maybe a bit more tasteless. Being promoted as the “most inaccurate medieval cemetery management sim of all time”, it’s clear that one shouldn’t take it too seriously, but the game’s premise is certainly not for everyone. Building and managing a graveyard as well as using all the resources at one’s disposal, whatever they might be, is certainly a different proposition than the typical sims.

What is even stranger than trying to cut costs to stay on top of the business and capitalism? Finding love somewhere and sometime during buying corpses from donkey wagons for carrots and maybe dropping some into the river if the graveyard’s full. It can get even more distasteful if one decides to use something else for meat in the burgers for a witch-burning festival. The inquisition can be a problem, but maybe it can also be a solution, who knows? Exploring mysterious dungeons can help to find alchemy ingredients that might be useful to poison nearby villagers for more customers in the ground.

It’s a very dark game many people might find disgusting, but just like the best Monty Python jokes and movies, there’s something inherently true and funny about all of this, as it shows how far people can go to run a successful business, especially in medieval times. With a lovely pixel art direction and colorful graphics, lots of humor found in dialogues between the graveyard proprietor and all sorts of crazy people, talking human skulls, and animals around, this might just be one of the most original games for a long time.
