Developer Radical Fish Games and publishers Deck13, WhisperGames, DANGEN Entertainment, Mayflower Entertainment resurrect 16-bit SNES pixel art and gameplay with 2D action-RPG CrossCode.
JRPG stories wouldn’t be complete without amnesia, but this time it comes with a bit of a twist. The game’s plot revolves around Lea who has to play MMO CrossWorlds in order to regain her memories and also the ability to speak again, as she has somehow become mute as well. This premise certainly beats the typical save-the-world cliché. Of course she meets other, much more talkative characters on the way who join her on her quest, which involves lots of overworld and dungeon exploration with fast-paced battles to boot. Seeing her dash around with faster-than-light animations from both an isometric perspective and side-view, depending on the level, certainly doesn’t make this a game for the more thoughtful RPG fan, that’s for sure.
However, it’s not all about fast reactions, as there’s a deep RPG system with various intricate skill trees to unlock and abilities to upgrade (100 combat arts and even more passive skills, to be exact). With 7 areas to explore, over 120 enemies to fight, including more than 30 bosses, playtime should range from 30-80 hours, so it’s definitely not a weekend playthrough. From the first looks of it, the environments are varied and detailed with some great pixel art, making it even more engaging to spend time in CrossWorlds.
The game is out now on PC with a 15% launch discount that will last until September 27th, 7pm UTC.
