Snowhound Games and 1C Company‘s Deep Sky Derelicts mixes tactical strategy/RPG/card battling mechanics with sci-fi graphic novel visuals.
The general plot about scavengers in deep space looking for metal scraps, clues and precious artifacts on derelict alien ships that allows them to gain citizenship and a better life on the planet instead of cruising around in dangerous space might not be the most innovative sci-fi story, but it’s a good excuse to explore and fight one’s way through procedurally generated corridors with a team of up to three mercenaries. Maybe there aren’t always hostile encounters, as traders or more friendly people/creatures can help out.
Name dropping of influential games like the classic X-COM series, indie hit FTL: Faster Than Light or even Blizzard’s almighty Hearthstone should be enough to get excited about this genre mix. Turn-based battles fought with the use of cards or leveling up one’s recruits and improving their abilities means that there’s always something new to adjust to or to look forward to unlock. The biggest selling point, at least for me, however is the great graphic novel art which simply looks awesome.
The game is out now on PC with a 10% launch discount that will last until October 2nd, 5pm UTC.
