HOF Studios‘ turn-based roguelike sci-fi strategy game Depth of Extinction offers plenty of fun and frustration for anyone remembering the good old X-COM days.
It seems to be common practice these days for indie developers to look at the classic X-COM series for atmosphere and gameplay mechanics inspirations, and this title is no different, although this time there are no aliens attacking humanity, but machines running amok. As if being forced to live underwater wasn’t enough to evoke feelings of claustrophobia and panic, various factions have split humanity into an even more violent bunch than people were before, but one still tries to save what is left of human civilization.
This is certainly not a title for a laid back afternoon playthrough, as permadeath lurks behind every corner. Fighting turn-based battles against 25 enemies from 5 factions is complemented by a character progression system, which means 8 unlockable classes and 115 various weapons, armor, and items to choose from for team members. While this all sounds rather well-known genre territory the game treads, at least it does a good job of showing that this is a hardcore title with some good retro-styled pixel art and a surprising amount of blood on display.
The game is out now on PC with a 10% launch discount that will last until October 4th, 3pm UTC. In addition, the soundtrack is available to purchase with the same discount, and buying them together means another 10% off.
