Amazon Prime Video watchlist: October 2018

October 2018 continued the TV horror tradition of killing walking zombies and people talking or dying.

TV shows:
The Walking Dead (Season 3) [8/10]
The Walking Dead (Season 4) [5/10]

Who would have thought that the third season of The Walking Dead would offer more thrills and kills than ever, considering that the second one was such a borefest? Maybe it has to do with introducing an adversary like the Governor who was so memorably sadistic in the comic series? Surprisingly, in the TV show he’s portrayed as someone one can actually relate to and who then slowly but steadily becomes a psychopath, which makes this one of the better alternative versions. While there are certainly conversations that drag out too long, the storylines are engaging enough, the characters easier to relate to, and there are finally enough zombie fights with their fair share of over-the-top gore. It almost makes one forget how tedious the previous season was.

Unfortunately, the fourth season falls into the trap of deviating too much from the source material, offering a boring disease breaking out in the prison that might be realistic horror in a post-apocalyptic scenario, but has been seen in so many other TV shows. Then there’s a more tragic look at the Governor who seems to become a better man, which feels too forced with its melancholic drama scenes. When he finally becomes his old self again, the ensuing battle sequences in the prison make for a short exciting episode, but then the season loses steam again. While it’s interesting to split the group and tell different stories of the characters’ struggle for survival, only a few emotional scenes are memorable, while the rest is too disconnected from an engaging storyline that connects them together. Considering that the season ends with a cliffhanger when it starts to become suspenseful again, it’s obvious that this is another drop in quality of a TV show that never quite knows what it wants if it deviates too much from the comic book series.

So again, I have mixed feelings about The Walking Dead. On the one hand it complements the comic book series in interesting new ways, on the other hand it fails to tell a coherent story with interesting characters if it tries to stand on its own. Hopefully, what follows will be as intense as the third season and not as sleep-inducing as the fourth one…
