Impact Gameworks‘ roguelike action-RPG Tangledeep receives another creative push into the realms of classic 16-bit adventuring with its DLC Legend of Shara.
The original game was released only two months ago in February 2019 and passed me by unnoticed, not because of my lack of interest, but due to life outside blogging. Serving as a prequel, the new character Shara has to battle her way through dungeons and all kinds of other fantasy locations. Playing as the Calligrapher, one can handle two weapons at once, the pen and sword (including some magic spells), so the age-old question of what is mightier can be answered if one fights hard enough.
The gameplay doesn’t simply revolve around the typical roguelike hack-and-slashing and surviving in procedurally generated dungeons, as it deviates from the core game. Unlike the former heroine Mirai, one doesn’t earn XP but JP to level up stats which help to increase the XP level. New abilities can be learned by either opening Pandora’s Boxes and choosing between three random skills or one can rest at Campfires where other random abilities can be picked. This is only the tip of the gameplay feature iceberg, as many new enemies and bosses as well as freshly created environments are incentives enough to dive into this fantasy world that looks and sounds as if it was taken from the good old days of 16-bit gaming. Variety also comes in the form of the Mysterious Wanderer who provides new challenges with dungeons to explore, creatures to slay, and treasures to find. New Item Dreams help to keep things fresh, as areas one has already visited change their appearance and offer more surprises on the way.
The DLC is out now on PC, with a a 30% launch discount if one buys it together with the base game until April 11th, 1pm UTC.
