GOG release: “Diablo: Hellfire”

Blizzard Entertainment‘s seminal fantasy action-RPG Diablo receives its expansion Hellfire as a free update on GOG.

Diablo: Hellfire tells the non-canonical story about the demon Na-Krul who threatens the town of Tristram. Of course it’s up to a hero to save the day by going into dungeons and killing all sorts of monsters while leveling up and looting. I haven’t published any news about the original base game, but now is probably the best time to cover both releases, especially since they’re influential for the whole gaming industry.

Despite having aged a bit with graphics, sounds, and storytelling, while endlessly clicking mouse buttons during combat also seems archaic, the games are still fun to play. Just like the original, the expansion pack comes with high-resolution support and compatibility updates to make it run on modern systems. What one receives in addition to the addictive base game, is a Monk class, new weapons and items, new missions, locations, dungeons, and enemies. Some RPG purists might sneer at the simplicity of the games, but I still remember having spent countless hours on Diablo and never having regretted a single minute of it, thanks to an amazing soundtrack and one-more-go/dungeon gameplay.

Diablo: Hellfire is an odd expansion pack, considering that it wasn’t developed by the big company, but by now defunct Synergistic Software. It’s still a true Diablo experience that has now been added as a free update to the base game. As part of the Summer Sale Festival, the game is currently 10% off until June 17, 10 PM UTC, too.
