DONTNOD Entertainment has made a name for themselves with the Life is Strange games because of their narrative strengths and decision-making gameplay. Vampyr focuses on Gothic horror and turns away from a classic adventure game template. As Dr. Jonathan Reid, the player is tasked to find a cure for London citizens who suffer from a severe flu, while feeding on them as a vampire.
Unlike their previous games, Vampyr is much more action-heavy, but it again asks the player to make decisions. Fighting against vampire hunters, the undead, and other supernatural creatures can be done by using unholy powers. These can also used to manipulate people and dive into their lives. As citizens remember one’s actions, one has to live with the consequences, which can either mean saving London or dooming it. The genre mix is certainly ambitious and a departure from what the company has done before, and even if the mechanics aren’t perfect, change is always a great thing.
Originally released in June 2018, Vampyr is now available DRM-free on GOG with a 60% launch discount that will last until June 21st, 1pm UTC. Let’s hope that the company’s other games will make it to the platform, too.
