DeadToast Entertainment and Devolver Digital‘s My Friend Pedro combines stylish slo-mo action with a violent 2D shooter presentation.
Despite its strange title and a banana on the title page, this isn’t a game for children. It’s actually a banana of the sentient variety that makes the player go on a killing spree through the crime underworld with any violent means necessary, which might also result in exploding heads and guts.
Who needs a storyline or character development when it’s all about style over substance? While this is certainly no Max Payne successor, the action on display is impressive. Being able to fly through the air and shoot with both hand weapons looks as cool as it can be. Running and jumping through doors and glass is the order of the day, although there are also more dynamic sequences like a motorcycle chase or a few physics-based puzzles. However, the game focuses on violent shoot-outs and acrobatic maneuvers in slow-motion. The best scenes can even be captured with an automated gif generator that allows sharing these awesome clips over social media.
The game is out now on PC and Nintendo Switch, showing that an era of simple but cool-looking 2D shooters is far from over.
