Game release: “198X” (PC)

Hi-Bit Studios198X isn’t only a mix of various arcade genres, but a coming-of-age story and a love letter to the 80ies.

Set in Suburbia in 198X, the game tells the story of Kid, a teenager who discovers the local arcade and starts to find new worlds and new meaning in video games. Beating each game makes him more confident, so the game and real world soon become mixed up.

Anyone familiar with the arcade scene or retro games in general will recognize the various genres the game makes the player experience: the beat’em up, shoot’em up, racing game, ninja game, and RPG. Each title offers stages and game mechanics one is used to in each individual genre, although there seem to be some unique twists and turns. But it’s not all about winning or nostalgia, even if it’s a big part of the game with the pixel art style and 80ies music. It’s more about an individual’s growth to adulthood, something so many recent movies have tried to achieve. However, 198X might succeed in a much more convincing way, because it is a game about games and people’s personal connection to the medium, after all.

The game is out now on PC and will be available on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch as well. While there’s no launch discount and the playtime of just 2 hours doesn’t seem like much, it sure looks like the best arcade experience one could have in a short amount of time, especially with a potent story and various genres it covers. It also says “Part 1” in the description, so there should be a follow-up, too.
