Metroidvania games have become so synonymous with indie titles that it’s difficult to find something new these days. Gato Roboto already wins a prize because of its hero: a cat in a robot suit that tries to survive in an alien underworld and rescues its captain and crashed spaceship. This isn’t done by peaceful negotiations, but by lots of death-defying platforming and death-bringing shooting.
Labyrinthine levels, countless pitfalls and enemies to blast to pixels are reason enough to be on one’s toes or paws. With new weapons and items, it’s possible to reach formerly inaccessible parts of the environments that also host a few boss fights. Presented in black-and-white, the 8-bit visuals might not be to everyone’s taste (and the terrible techno music in the trailer is definitely not mine), but there’s something to be said about a cat in a mech suit and other cute-looking enemies or animal characters to get interested in metroidvania games again.
Gato Roboto was originally released in May this year and is now available on GOG with a 15% launch discount that will last until July 19th, 1pm UTC.
