Comic adventure games don’t come any funnier and cartoon-like as Deck13‘s Ankh – Anniversary Edition that finally finds a new home on GOG.
I can’t remember when I’ve played a German adventure game that hits almost all the right notes when it comes to slapstick humor and good writing, but Ankh – Anniversary Edition is one of those few times when it all works. The story alone makes for a great comedy premise, as a party in the pharaoh’s pyramid goes horribly wrong and Egyptian Assil is confronted with a deadly curse after having discovered a precious amulet. Trying to run away from the god Osiris and finding a way to speak to the pharao results in all sorts of comedy moments.
Even after all these years, the game looks particularly great with a timeless Disney-like cartoon style, and it sounds even better with a catchy soundtrack and (at least in the German version) very good voice acting. Of course it’s not all about the colorful presentation, but also about the gameplay with lots of weird but fun puzzles to solve and even weirder and funnier characters to talk to, making this a must-play for any fan of the genre or comedy in general.
Originally published in 2005 and later re-released in 2015 as the Ankh – Anniversary Edition, the game is now DRM-free on GOG with a 75% launch discount that will last until August 2, 1 PM UTC. There’s also a special Deck13 promo sale with even more games that are worth checking out (and writing about). Hopefully the two sequels Heart of Osiris and Battle of the Gods will make it to the platform as well, as these are awesome, too.
