Deck13‘s fantasy action-RPG Venetica – Gold Edition arrives on GOG and proves that the company did some serious and seriously good games in the past, too.
After having covered Ankh – Anniversary Edition in this release news, I’m happy that another gem of the German development team has made it to the DRM-free platform. Venetica – Gold Edition is a much more ambitious project, not only because of its RPG heritage, but because of its storytelling and world-building. The setting is Venice where the young Scarlett witnesses the murder of her companion by a secretive alliance of necromancers. The original storyline is about her finding out that she’s the daughter of Death and is now blessed with the power to stop the alliance and save the world.
While the game might look a bit dated, compared to other RPGs, the world and its inhabitants are still nice to look at, which is due to the detailed characters and the day/night cycle. Music and voice acting are also of a very high quality, even in the English version, which is no small feat for an original German product. Of course gameplay takes center stage, and so unlike the adventure game shenanigans of a certain Egyptian, this is a much more action-heavy affair, including real-time fights against nightmarish creatures and human opponents. Presented as an open-world, the player will meet many kinds of people and has to complete different quests, as it’s the case with all RPGs. However, the use of the powers of the “Twilight World” that allows Scarlet to travel between the worlds of the living and the dead should make this a more diverse experience.
Originally published in 2009, Venetica – Gold Edition is now available DRM-free on GOG with a 75% launch discount that will last until August 2, 1 PM UTC. Please also check out the special Deck13 promo sale which features more discounted titles of the German company.
