Game release: “Anodyne 2: Return to Dust” (PC)

Analgesic Productions‘s action-adventure Anodyne 2: Return to Dust is a nostalgic trip back to the good old PS1 and N64 times.

PS1 Japanese RPGs or adventures can be quite heavy with their storytelling, and Anodyne 2: Return to Dust certainly embraces this weirdness, as it tells the story about Nova, a Nano Cleaner who looks for people on the island of New Theland whose bodies have been infected by Nano Dust, resulting in distorted emotions and desires. But it’s not only the story, but the gameplay and presentation that hark back to times when 3D was still in its experimental infancy.

Exploring cities, valleys, and wastelands in 3D with lots of platforming, but also walking around and speaking to many characters is part of the game, while the 2D perspective shakes things up a bit: By using a Nano Vacuum, Nova has to suck up and fight enemies and to figure out how people’s inner lives work with the help of the Spark that can shrink the hero (somehow reminiscent of how minds work in Psychonauts). Turning into a car to drive around the world might only be a bit eccentric in comparison. While the graphics are definitely in need of some eye adjustment if one is used to more refined, modern graphics, the soundtrack is stellar with some very atmospheric tunes to listen to.

The game is out now on PC with a 10% launch discount that also applies to the soundtrack, with the predecessor being 50% off, until August 19th, 5pm UTC. Owners of the original can have a 20% discount on the sequel, plus an additional 10% off if one buys it together with the soundtrack. These discounts are available until August 22nd, 5pm UTC.
