Massive Monster, Tasselfoot, and Armor Games Studios‘s platformer Never Give Up brings hardcore gaming to a new level of frustration and fun.
Anyone who’s played Super Meat Boy knows what it means to practice hard and die again and again, learning from mistakes. Usually these mistakes come at a bloody, gory price, and Never Give Up celebrates this hardcore mentality, as vicious traps have to be overcome by pixel perfect jumps to reach the end of the level or skip it if it all becomes too much to handle.
The GIVE UP button and YouTube-like commentary might make fun of the player, but according to the developers, it should also build character, and with the option to return to past levels and still progress if one gets stuck in one particular challenge at least makes things a bit more accessible. Of course it doesn’t mean that failing again and again doesn’t become an exercise in frustration and endurance. Still, with a lovely cartoon style presentation, including some gorgeous boss designs, and an awesome soundtrack, it’s a bittersweet experience to try again and again. Add costumes and collectibles, plus a split timer for speed runners, and this should become a winner for content creators.
The game is out now on PC and Nintendo Switch, with the former having a 10% launch discount that will last until August 20th, 4pm UTC.
