Whoever thought that new ideas are rare in games, especially in the action-adventure genre, shouldn’t look any further than what Tim Schafer’s company has been up to, with the upcoming release of Psychonauts 2 but also as a publisher with this title. Reminiscent of Costume Quest in both comic art style and also the punk attitude, it’s not surprising that the heroes are children, too. Set in the 1980ies, the game tells the story of Nessa and Demelza who explore the coasts of British island Penfurzy on their bicycles, looking for a legendary lost treasure.
Of course memories of classic movies like Goonies are triggered, which isn’t surprising, as it’s also a story about friendship and adventure. What follows is a game that mixes action with RPG elements, so anything is done with bikes than can also be upgraded. Solving puzzles and fighting enemies with improvised abilities like frisbees or water-balloons adds to variety, while working as a team is essential to progress. The presentation complements the bonkers adventure with some lovely hand-painted graphics and a punk soundtrack, so this could be the game of the year already.
The game is out now on PC and PS4, and even if there isn’t any launch discount, a title like this has to be recommended, because there’s simply nothing quite like it. So get into the saddle of a bike and do it all for love and glory! You might even want to check out the two comic books available on Amazon…
