Amazon Prime Video in August 2019 was all about bloodsuckers.
The Strain (Season 2) [6/10]
After having been surprised by the first season of The Strain (see Amazon Prime Video watchlist: July 2019), my expectations were a bit higher with Season 2. However, it could just have stopped there with the temporary defeat of The Master who got away at the last minute, a narrative device one can’t really call imaginative. Now even more characters are introduced and it gets a bit political. It also becomes unintentionally silly. Having a vampire fight alongside the group of survivors that has a Van Helsing-figure in the form of an old man is taken very seriously, and that’s probably the biggest problem of the series: With all the fighting going on and the constant flashbacks to Nazi Germany to explain the back stories of some characters, the line between classic vampire horror, modern action, social commentary, and simply trash becomes blurry. It doesn’t help much that the characters aren’t much interesting, either, making some episodes rather boring.
Only one TV show to watch? Yes, again thanks to Gamescom (the coverage of which is still going on), it was better that way, although the next (this month) will have more seasons, even if they are of the same show.
