The Council is a very special game, not only because of its unique setting and storyline, but also because of how it mixes two genres to great effect. Taking place in a mansion on a small island of the shores of England in 1793, it’s about a secret society of which Napoleon Bonaparte and George Washington are a part of, to name but a few. Louis de Richet is invited to a meeting by Lord Mortimer, and soon the fate of the world lies in his hands.
What makes the game particularly interesting is that one can play through it in different ways thanks to a system that involves levelling up and using skill points for upgrading specific attributes. With other 15 skills to choose from and many alternating story paths depending on one’s decisions, this plays more like a role-playing game, but one which also has quite a few puzzles. The main focus are dialogues during which one has to confront people and learn about their weaknesses. One always has to live with the consequences of one’s actions, though, and there are certain situations in which one has to be careful what one says or does, as some actions might lead to characters becoming quite hostile, which is what politics are obviously all about.
The Council was originally released in a 5-episodes-format from March 2018 until December 2018 and it’s now available DRM-free as a complete package on GOG with a 66% launch discount that will last until December 3, 2 pm UTC.
