Movie adaptations in gaming form aren’t usually known for their quality, but this title seems to nail the dark futuristic vibe of the first two James Cameron flicks. Set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, one plays as soldier Jacob Rivers who is part of the resistance against the Skynet robots. Led by the legendary John Connor, Jacob becomes more than just a lowly private, as he is targeted by the machines to be terminated in the final battle that could decide the fate of mankind.
Fighting against the iconic T-800 is a given, but there are also new enemies that haven’t featured in the Terminator universe just yet, showing that the developers had some creative freedom to a certain extent. What is left intact is a sense of despair and the will to survive, which is mainly because one protects people with their own motivations and back stories. These can either survive or die during the game, which has an effect on the ending, too. This is primarily a first-person shooter, but there are also RPG elements, like side quests or leveling up skills, in addition to some trading and crafting element, involving scraps one picks up along the way.
The game is out now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and while there’s no launch discount, it’s worth getting simply because there haven’t been any Terminator games for such a long time, especially ones that are true to the original movies.
