Christmas books: “An Illustrated Die Hard Christmas: The Illustrated Holiday Classic”

One of the all-time-classics of Christmas movies receives a storybook version for adults thanks to Doogie Horner’s and J.J. Harrison’s An Illustrated Die Hard Christmas: The Illustrated Holiday Classic.

After the first day of Christmas provided some storybook fun for kids, the second day has something a little bit different, as An Illustrated Die Hard Christmas: The Illustrated Holiday Classic, published by Insight Editions in 2017, is an ingenious take on both the original Die Hard movie I also reviewed and the classic ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas poem. The book is only 32 pages long, but it manages to tell the whole 2-hours-long story of John McTiernan’s action flick in rhyme form.

Presented in a rather cute children storybook style, but including violence and some cursing, it’s a concept that shouldn’t work. But it somehow does, even if some of the rhymes don’t always gel. Anyone who hasn’t seen the movie will also miss out on some information that keeps the story together at some points, but this is to be expected for such a short amount of text. All in all, it’s the perfect gift for any fan of the movie or those who’ve grown tired of child-friendly Christmas stories. Speaking of gifts, there’s even a gift set version of the book that has a John McClane plush toy with a suction cup attachment, which only costs a few EUR/USD/GBP more.

Score: 8/10
