After The Surge took two years before it was finally released on GOG (see this news), it didn’t take so long for The Surge 2 to show up in DRM-free form, even if it meant waiting a few months. Everything that made the original so much fun, especially the bloody dismemberment action, is left intact here, although one now fights in a much wider world. After one’s plane is shot down by a storm on the way to Jericho City, one wakes up weeks later in a detention center only to find out that robots have taken over and wreaking havoc in the city.
Of course one doesn’t sit idly by and instead goes on a bloody rampage in a suit of armor, engaging in battles that offer rewards for the winner, namely acquiring the opponent’s equipment. Unlike more youth-friendly fare like Pacific Rim: Uprising, one won’t simply see a bit of gooey blood, but all the red liquid that comes with severed heads, arms and legs. Being an RPG, it’s not all hack-and-slash action without a progression system, involving abilities, implants, and other customization options to build one’s character.
The Surge 2 was originally released in September 2019 and is now available DRM-free on GOG with a 45% discount that lasts until January 23, 2020, 2 PM UTC. If one already owns The Surge, then this means 50% off the original price. There’s also the The Surge 2: Premium Edition which includes the full game plus all the Season Pass content, like DLC The Kraken and all the new post-launch weapons and armor sets.
