I’ve already reviewed the original series in the Netflix watchlist: September 2019 and had a quick glimpse at this game on the fourth day at gamescom 2019, and while it certainly looked more fun than the Stranger Things videogame, I was still a bit skeptic about the content and presentation. This might have to do with the streaming platform lacking expertise in game development or general prejudices against licensed videogames.
However, this time it seems that the game might be an exception to the rule, because it looks rather nice with cartoon-like graphics and using turn-based strategy gameplay feels fitting for recruiting an army and leading the resistance of Gelflings against the Skeksis. As one can assign jobs to one’s troops and choose different abilities and equipment, there’s certainly more to think about than in an action-RPG that would have been an easier way out to reach a wider or casual audience. As the development team has background knowledge in strategy games, this doesn’t look like a throwaway title at all.
The game is out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, although there’s no launch discount.
