TurtleBlaze and The Arcade Crew present a different kind of ninja with metroidvania platformer KUNAI.
There have been countless ninjas and robots with ninja skills in games, but there hasn’t been a hero that is quite like Tabby: a tablet that has been powered up by the soul of an ancient warrior. Of course featuring bad robots means there’s an evil A.I. named Lemonkus that has to be stopped in a world in which humanity has almost become extinct. Being part tablet, part robot, the hero has to become a killer machine in order to succeed.
As is usually the case with Metroidvania games, one starts out with nothing, but slowly acquires many abilities by disposing of enemy robots. As a ninja game, lots of jumping around is involved, although landing on enemy heads has more to do with a certain Nintendo plumber. With a quirky sense of humor, no real bloodshed, it might not be what one would expect from a stealth killer, but then again it’s a tablet doing all the ninja work.
The game is out now on both PC and Nintendo Switch, so if you want to see if the platformer genre has something new to offer, this title does the trick with its main character, and as it’s published by the nice folks of The Arcade Crew I met on the third day at gamescom 2019, it’s another reason to support it.
