GOG releases: “Wolfenstein: The New Order” and “Wolfenstein: The Old Blood”

GOG’s cooperation with Bethesda makes Machine Games‘ gory modern FPS classics Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood a DRM-free dream come true.

The Wolfenstein series is notorious for its violence and the abundant use of swastikas, but it’s also famous for pushing the first-person shooter genre forward like no other game. As I already wrote about GOG releasing more Quake and Wolfenstein with censorship issues, the franchise also has a certain history with Germany. Not being available to purchase in that country, it’s great to see that the newest two titles can be added to German customers’ library, and for a pretty good price.

Wolfenstein: The New Order started it all, with an alternative 60ies setting when the Nazis have won the war, and it’s up to a group of resistance fighters to bring the regime down. Of course the main character, Captain William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, deals with the enemies as he’s always dealt with them: using firepower, knives, and other weapons to make a bloody mess of them. Unlike the original 90ies game, this is a much more cinematic experience, which means more bombastic set-pieces and actually some memorable characters, especially villains. Explosions, dismemberments, it’s all here in their gory glory, but with a lot of sick humor and a presentation that makes a movie like Iron Sky look tame in comparison.

Wolfenstein: The New Order was originally released in 2014 and is now available DRM-free on GOG with a 70% launch discount that lasts until February 24, 2020, at 2 PM UTC.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is a pre-quel set in 1946, shortly before the Nazis win the war, when Blazkowicz has to infiltrate the titular Bavarian castle that is obviously full of Nazis. Zombies and all sorts of mechanical atrocities are a given in this all-out action game that is as violent and full of one-liners as the best action movies, making Inglorious Basterds look comparatively like child’s play. While it may follow the same linear FPS path as its predecessors, it’s still great to see something as gory and fun as this.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood came out in 2015 and is now on GOG with a 70% discount that lasts until February 24, 2020, at 2 PM UTC.

If you want to have both games, you can also buy the Two Pack version which is even cheaper.
