Louis Rigaud‘s, Goblinz Studio‘s and Maple Whispering‘s thought-provoking Iris and the Giant is a unique mix of card-building, RPG, roguelike, and puzzle game.
Card games are dime a dozen these days in both AAA and indie games, but few feature such a personal story as this title. It’s about young girl Iris who has to fight her own demons by climbing up different parts of her mind to meet a giant and comfort him. As one progresses from stage to stage, one slowly uncovers parts of Iris’ memories, making the player understand why she has embarked on this inner journey. A strange idea indeed, but unique nonetheless, giving the whole card-battling gameplay a more emotional touch than similar titles.
Building a deck isn’t only for pushing the player forward, but to make Iris stronger as well in both senses of the word. Choosing the right cards in battle, unlocking more to use next time might be what all games of this type are about. But considering the reason behind all this, character development has never felt this important. Boasting a great hand-drawn visual style and soothing soundtrack, the game certainly looks and sounds like something very special indeed.
The game is out now on PC with a 10% launch discount that lasts until March 5, 2020, at 6 PM UTC.
