Amazon Prime Video in February didn’t have a comic adaptation, but a book adaptation in TV form with varying success.
American Gods (Season 2) [6/10]
After all the hype of the first season of American Gods, I thought the show was rather disappointing when I reviewed it in the Amazon Prime Video watchlist: April 2018. So almost two years later, I gave the second one a try without high expectations. Again it proved to be quite engaging with its cinematic art, so expect many slow motion moments and epic imagery to boot. The amount of violence is again quite high, surprisingly so for a 16+ age certification. High production values and good acting aside, what makes the season again difficult to recommend is that a lot of time is spent to explain the characters’ relationships and their pasts, but except for a strong beginning, the plot moves at a snail’s pace that one wonders if it progresses at all. Only in the last episode, the writers suddenly realize that something should be happening, and that something unfortunately builds up to a third season without delivering much in the second one.
The problem with streaming services seems that despite looking more and more like movies, exclusive TV shows have the right actors and actresses, plus some great cinematography, but they still fall into the trap of being too long and making the audience wait for the next season. Hopefully American Gods will finally be brought to an end and have something like a story to speak of…
