It’s not often that one can say having many bugs in a game is a good thing, but in the case of Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, it’s really a feature that makes the title stand out from other RPGs. It’s about bugs Vi, Kabbu, and Leif who take on a journey in Bugaria to look for the titular sapling that offers immortality. What follows is a kid-friendly adventure with quirky humor, but also quite a few puzzles to solve and fights to win.
As the bugs have unique abilities, these have to be used with the environment in order to progress, while turn-based battles make team work essential as well. Leveling up and crafting by using a cooking system are as much part of the RPG formula as completing additional side quests and beating optional bosses. With some nice cartoon artwork and catchy music, this is a rather unique distraction from all the JRPGs that take themselves too seriously.
Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling was originally released in November 2019 and is now available DRM-free on GOG with a 20% launch discount that lasts until March 12, 2020, at 2 PM UTC.
