Game release: “Murder by Numbers” (PC, Nintendo Switch)

Mediatonic‘s and Irregular Corporation‘s mix of investigation adventure and number puzzle game Murder by Numbers is a throwback to the good old 90ies.

Set in Los Angeles in 1996, the game revolves around actress Honor Mizrahi whose boss is killed shortly after she is fired from a hit TV detective show. Together with a reconnaissance robot named SCOUT, she has to solve the mystery that spreads to other entertainment establishments in order to find the real culprit and prove her innocence. Part visual novel adventure similar to the Ace Attorney series and part Picross puzzler, it’s an unexpected mix of genres, but that somehow works: By solving these pixel puzzles, one finds clues that again can be used to interrogate witnesses in order to slowly unravel what’s really going on.

I’ve already reviewed the Ace Attorney (Phoenix Wright) series and Apollo Justice plus Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and despite not being a big fan of anime, these titles with their quirky sense of humor and intriguing if somehow convoluted storylines were a joy to experience. Not having played any Picross title (or solved some of the puzzles in print form), I don’t know what to expect from this game, other than that any investigation adventure is high on my list, and with musician Masakazu Sugimori responsible for the soundtrack who has done the sublime scores for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick (see review) and Viewtiful Joe, this should be reason enough to try it out.

The game is out now on PC and Nintendo Switch, the former with a 10% launch discount that lasts until tomorrow, March 13, 2020, at 2 PM UTC. There’s also a collector’s edition that includes the soundtrack as well as the digital artbook.
