The 90ies console era certainly left a mark on both modern players as well as indie developers, as both have tried to re-enact their love for top-down RPG adventures with timeless pixel art. Ara Fell definitely delivers on the visual side, but also provides enough excitement in the storytelling and gameplay department, even if the fantasy elements sound a bit weird: a floating world called Ara Fell that literally falls from the sky because elven sorcerers tried to save it from destruction but somehow achieved the opposite, with only a young woman and her group of adventurers being able to prevent the end of the world.
World exploration, puzzle solving, as well as fighting with weapons and magic against smaller and bigger enemies won’t win any originality awards, but create a warm fuzzy feeling for those who’ve grown up with these types of games, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all. What the new edition includes are an improved battle system, new character classes and skills, new side quests, a better UI, upgraded crafting system, new enchanting system, enhanced aspect ratios, new difficulty modes, an autosave feature, Twitch integration, and more, making this the definitive edition.
The original game was released in 2016, but the Enhanced Edition has only been out for a few days as a free update for those who already own the game. For everyone else who missed it the first time around, it replaces the 2016 version and is the only edition that can be bought now on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
