Serenity Forge‘s platformer-adventure game Neversong offers a rather moody alternative to other titles.
Some games take a long time to take the form its developer wants it to be. This title is something of a reboot of Thomas Brush’s first commercial game Coma that came out in 2010 on Newgrounds. With the help of Kickstarter, the designer and publisher have built on it and can now offer a much better experience that is about young boy Peet who wakes up from a coma only to find his girlfriend has gone missing. By investigating Blackform Asylum, he learns more than he bargained for, especially about his own past.
What sounds like a survival or psychological horror game turns out to be a mix of platformer and adventure with quite a lot of fighting involved. One isn’t all alone, as childhood friends and a pet bird soon accompany Peet on his adventure to beat bosses and monsters, but also grown-ups. Evading and jumping around only helps so much, which is why a baseball bat is used as a weapon.
After already being available on Apple Arcade, the game has been out for a couple of weeks on PC with a 15% discount that only lasts until tomorrow, June 15, 2020, at 1 PM UTC.
