Amazon Prime Video watchlist: July 2020

Amazon Prime Video in July presented a violent version of contemporary society.

TV shows:
The Purge (Season 2) [9/10]

After the successful first season (see Amazon Prime Video watchlist: May 2019) and obviously the three movies preceding the TV show, The Purge could have just followed the same template with its second one. Fortunately it does its own thing, surprising the audience by not simply focusing on the night itself, but on what happens before the next one, including many (often fun) glimpses at how society works with marketing or generally preparing for/coping with Purge Night. Having again multiple characters and narrative strands that meet in the finale, suspense is kept at a high level. While the controversial violence and general concept is as questionable as before, the show does a great job of discussing themes like psychopathic behavior and hypocrisy, making it as relevant as ever. Hopefully this won’t be the end of the franchise, as the quality is still there.

Many TV shows seem to rely on soap opera elements or repeating the same thing again and again, but thankfully there are examples like The Purge that are both suspenseful and relevant in today’s political and social climate, while the series is also highly entertaining.
