Draw Distance‘s visual novel Vampire: The Masquerade – Shadows of New York expands on the dark Coteries of New York and offers bloody noir atmosphere aplenty.
Despite not having covered Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York which was released last year, the Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop game both are based on is something I’m looking forward to covering in the near or far future. The GOG release of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines already proved there’s a lot to love about the franchise, and as the upcoming sequel is highly anticipated by many people, the newest visual novel set in the same world should do just fine at the moment, especially since the graphic novel art style looks great.
One plays as outcast Lasombra in a world of warring vampire clans and has to investigate the death of the New York’s Anarch leader. With vampire generations still struggling for power, it becomes clear that there’s much more at stake (not only through a vampire’s heart) than it appears to be. As a stand-alone experience, one doesn’t have to play the other games, but it sure helps for immersion purposes. The murder mystery turns out to be a very personal story, as the player has to make decisions to form Lasombra’s personality while interrogating suspects, as well as keeping track of one’s blood supply, i.e. watching out for a potential snack in an unsuspecting citizen.
The game is out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch with a 10% launch discount that lasts until September 17, 2020, at 5 PM UTC. Both the digital soundtrack and artbook can be bought separately as well.
