Fatbot Games‘ steampunk dungeon crawler Vaporum: Lockdown doesn’t only serve as a prequel, but also as an example of how to do beautiful first-person RPGs.
Preceding the original game I previewed 3 years ago (time really flies by), the story takes place in the tower of Arx Vaporum, a research facility in the middle of an ocean. As scientiest Ellie Teller, one has to escape and survive the tower, as hell soon breaks loose because of a failed research project.
Clearly inspired by classic games like the Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder series, the action on screen is presented in a first-person perspective with real-time combat, although one can opt to use the Stop Time mode to better think about the next steps. Anyone who thinks that dungeon crawlers are outdated, should look at the atmosphere created by the great lighting and enemy design effects. Of course it’s not all about the presentation, because there are enough puzzles to solve and much exploring to do in addition to tough battles.
The game is out now on PC, and if one already owns the base game or buys it together with the newest title, then both games will receive a 10% discount that lasts until September 25, 2020, at 5 PM UTC. Vaporum is also 60% off its original price, so that’s 70% if one buys the double package.
