Netflix in September 2020 was all about the history of gaming.

TV shows:
High Score (Episodes 1-6) [10/10]

Despite the misleading title, this show is not primarily focused on arcade games or the competitive scene. Far from it, as it’s a comprehensive look at the formative years of gaming. This means that each episode covers different genres on various platforms, e.g. RPGs, FPS, platformers, and adventure games. Even if one has already consumed books and other documentaries, one always discovers something new, and the way how music and special effects are used to liven it up makes most TV documentaries look pale in comparison. While some genres are discussed too briefly (like adventure games), one has a clear sense of what makes this medium so exciting, learning first-hand from those who worked and still work in the industry. It’s funny, informative, and touching, even for those who think they know everything and those who usually avoid documentaries.
I never would have thought that a documentary about gaming would be so compelling after having read all sorts of books and digesting the Retrogamer magazine on a monthly basis. But High Score proved that there are so many untold stories and fun facts that make gaming such a memorable experience in the past, present, and future.
