Netflix in December 2020 brought back the 80ies in all their slasher horror glory.
American Horror Story: 1984 [8/10]
Being a big fan of slasher horror flicks and all things 80ies, my expectations were very high for American Horror Story: 1984, and the ninth season of the long-running anthology TV show certainly doesn’t disappoint with its nostalgic trip back to the days of Friday the 13th in particular (see the Halloween 2015 Movie Special, Day 3: “Friday the 13th I-X and remake” article). It’s just as bloody and gory with inventive kills and a high bodycount as one might expect, while the clothes and music add to the fun 80ies atmosphere. It’s clear that the cast really enjoys playing stereotypical characters at first, only to present them with a bit more depth later on. Unfortunately, there’s a supernatural twist that is too familiar to those who’ve been following the show for a while, making the final episodes less exciting.
American Horror Story still surprises with its mix of genres, although 1984 treads very familiar ground. However, it delivers enough thrills and kills that the TV show Slasher didn’t quite achieve (see reviews for Season 1 in Netflix watchlist: July 2017 and for Season 2 in Netflix watchlist: October 2018 ) and I’m very excited what’s next for this show and what crazy characters its cast will play.
