Bloober Team‘s psychological survival horror game The Medium provides a simultaneous glimpse into two realities.
Bloober Team has already proved itself with games like Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear: Inheritance, Layers of Fear 2, >observer_, and Blair Witch, dabbling in artful horror, cyberpunk, and even a (sort of) movie adaptation. Even if gameplay and storytelling weren’t always successful, the company still tried out different things, and The Medium is probably the most experimental game yet.
As I’ve already discussed in the Past gaming events: gamescom 2020, Day 4 article, the biggest innovation is the dual-reality gameplay that allows the player to control two characters at the same time, but in different versions of the same place. Clearly inspired by the Silent Hill series (not only because composer Akira Yamaoka is involved in the music), exploring places either in the real or spirit world makes for some very weird and creepy sequences. This is probably a good contender for next Halloween’s gaming special week (as it seems to be the case with Bloober Team every year) and it thankfully won’t make for nauseous gameplay because of the new third-person perspective.
The game is out now on PC as well as Xbox Series X and S with a 10% launch discount that lasts until February 4, 2021, at 5 PM UTC. The deluxe edition which includes a digital soundtrack and artbook can also be bought with 10% off its original price.
