Studio Koba and Team17‘s sci-fi action-adventure Narita Boy is a true love letter to the 80ies.

Anyone who knows the Tron movies will see the connections, as this title is about The Creator, a man who made the video game console Narita One and the smash hit game Narita Boy in the 80ies. However, the code inside the machine enters the real world, with antagonist Him making a return and deleting The Creator’s memories, and it’s up to the titular hero to save both reality and the Digital Kingdom with his trusty Technosword.

Despite the obvious influences and a heavy 80ies synth soundtrack, there’s something more than simple nostalgia that makes this title so memorable. It looks amazing with its pixel art and while there’s a lot of sword-fighting going on that might be found in other indies, this still seems rather special, probably because of its scope and interesting story ideas.

The game is out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
