Devespresso Games and Headup‘s adventure game Scarlet Hood and the Wicked Wood mixes side-scrolling with point-and-click puzzling in a time-warping storyline.

At first glance, the game seems to be another visual novel with obvious risqué humor and questionable representation of women. While there’s certainly a lot of fan service to be found here, the plot and gameplay is much more fun than it seems, revolving around titular heroine and singer Scarlet who is whisked away to the realm of Glome to lead a group of Munchkin through the Wicket Forest without being incinerated by the evil Black Witch LeFaba.

The number of logic puzzles might not be to anyone’s taste (like mine), but the time-loop idea of surviving seven days of misfortune and the mix of fairy tales and the well-known musical The Wizard of Oz should make this ordeal much more rewarding, especially since one can make decisions that have an effect on one’s story and result in multiple endings.

The game is out now on PC with a 15% launch discount that lasts until April 15, 2021, at 3 PM UTC. It’s available in a standard or deluxe edition, the latter of which including a digital soundtrack and artbook.
