I had the first glimpse of this game at Gamescom 2017 and then a hands-on session at gamescom 2019, which shows how long it’s been in the making. Taking place in a world where the Tree of Life is dying and tribes of animals are divided, one sets out to either save or destroy it as a biomutant.
There’s a lot going on in the game, and if you want to have my first impressions, check out the Past gaming events: gamescom 2019, Day 4 article. Being a mix of shooting, slashing, kung-fu action, RPG decision-making, customization and even weapon crafting simulation, the title tries to be a jack of all trades, it seems. However, if its gameplay matches the epic scale of the world and the very pretty graphics, this could still be a winner after all these years in production hell.
The game is out now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One as both digital and retail versions (although there seem to be availability issues with the US versions). The latter comes in three editions: the standard, collector’s, and atomic editions, which are pretty pricey and, as is to be expected, are limited and not readily available, either. It’s also possible to buy the digital soundtrack, and if one buys the game on GOG, one even receives the Shadow Warrior 2 Standard Edition as a freebie. This offer lasts until June 1, 2021, at 5 PM UTC.
