@Unepic_Fran and Versus Evil‘s stealth action-adventure UnMetal brings some much-needed self-awareness to the genre.

It’s been such a long time since a 2D Metal Gear Solid was released or one that didn’t feature a convoluted storyline with too many cut-scenes and not much gameplay. While obviously not official (the title says it all), this game is very much influenced by the stealth action gameplay of yesteryear, only with a bit more humor.

Playing as Jesse Fox who is prisoner in a covert military base for a crime he didn’t do, one has to escape the facility by any means necessary, which might be with gunfire, bare fists, or gadgets to get rid of the opposition. One also receives experience points which can be invested in different skills, but it’s clear that the most fun is to be had with references to the classic Hideo Kojima games. There are obviously some changes, so one shouldn’t expect sneaking around in a box. Instead a big piece of cheese as a disguise might do.

The game is out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch with a 20% launch discount that lasts until October 5, 2021, at 5 PM UTC. There’s also an UnDeluxe Edition which includes the soundtrack.
