It’s been 25 years since the original Corpse Party made its debut in Japan, but only 10 since it was released on PSP in the West, while 5 years ago a new PC version came out. So calling it a rather confusing history is an understatement, not to mention the manga and anime adaptations later. Despite all the various editions, the main idea remains the same: High school students become trapped in an alternate version of their school and are chased by spirits who pick them off one by one, often resulting in some gruesome death sequences.
The original RPG maker aesthetics are still clear so see, as one takes control over the students and the action is presented with a top-down view. Gameplay-wise it’s a mix of adventure and survival horror as well as RPG. This becomes prominent during decisions that change the story, i.e. if some students are kept alive or die. The new 2021 version doesn’t only offer the 5 main story and 14 extra chapters, but also two new ones about some of the characters.
The game is out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch with a 10% launch discount that lasts until October 27, 2021, at 5 PM UTC. If one already owns the classic version, then one receives a 25% discount.
